From a week ahead a vibe of anticipation could be felt in the air. Owairoa Primary School’s annual International Day was approaching and everyone was excited. Preparation for the big day involved colouring flags, organising costumes and teachers planning stimulating cultural activities.
Wednesday the 13th August finally arrived. School uniforms were shed for amazing attire. Over 60 countries were represented. The biggest groups were New Zealand and China. The style and colours were thrilling to the eye. The day kicked off to a full school parade. Children walked round the school waving flags while cheering families watched with evident pride and enjoyment.
A highlight of every International Day is the concert. A group of highly talented young pupils are selected each year. There were so many spectacular performances . The audience was mesmerised front start to finish.
Lunchtime signalled a really special and much anticipated feature of International Day- the Kiwi Lunch. The most popular combo was the $8 one which included a sausage in bread with tomato sauce, juice, a chocolate fish and a cookie. Happy pupils munching sausages were seen in all areas of the school.
Every team had a session to focus on activities. Some teams had a rotation while others focused on a task in their class. Many activities involved dancing, singing and art.
