From 3rd to 6th June, our Middle School proudly celebrated Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa – Samoan Language Week. This special week was an opportunity to recognise and honour the richness of the Samoan language and culture within our school community.
Samoan Language Week is an important event that helps students of Samoan heritage connect with their identity, language, and traditions. It also supports the preservation of Samoan, one of the most widely spoken Pacific languages in New Zealand. By learning about and engaging with this culture, all students gain a broader understanding of the diverse world around them.
Throughout the week, students took part in a variety of activities such as learning Samoan greetings and basic phrases, exploring Samoan music and dance, and creating Samoan-inspired art. Room M1 proudly showcased their Samoan pattern art, demonstrating both creativity and a thoughtful appreciation for traditional designs. These experiences encouraged curiosity and appreciation for cultural diversity while reinforcing the values of respect and inclusion.
Samoan Language Week was a meaningful celebration that brought our school community together. It reminded us of the importance of valuing all cultures and created a space where students could learn from one another in a spirit of respect and joy
