Mighty Mitey Lessons in Year 2

The Year 2 students have continued discussing, learning and inquiring about emotional well being through the Mitey programme. Many of the learning is now integrated and explored through Reading , Writing and Art.

The focus is shifting from identifying and explaining emotions to exploring ways of dealing with these emotions. For example, children read stories about anxiety, fears and worries and learned to identify and define them, as well as strategies and mechanism s of coping with these feelings

Friendship has continued to be a favourite topic, as children at this age are still learning what are the qualities of a good friend and how to make friends. The learning has also focused on the concept of belonging (to the classroom, family and community). Children have learned that by respecting others and their belongings they are making them feel as they belong and they are valued. The students were encouraged to think of their peers’ qualities and to write compliments highlighting these.

The next learning steps will further address the learners’ ability to recognise how other people feel, to understand that not everyone feels the same at the same time or feels the same about the same things. Children will also learn to recognise when themselves or others need help with feelings, and that it is important to ask for help with feelings.
