This term, we’ve embraced MITEY learning, focusing on understanding what makes us unique, managing our emotions, and supporting one another. The key areas of our learning have been exploring our feelings, understanding ourselves better, and knowing how to share and support others.
One of the most important things we’ve learned is how to describe emotions. Sometimes it’s hard to put how we feel into words, but this term, we’ve spent time identifying different emotions like happiness, anger, excitement, or nervousness. Recognising these emotions helps us understand ourselves better and communicate more effectively with others.
A fun and exciting activity this term was creating self-portraits. This helped us reflect on what makes us special. We looked at our likes, interests, and what makes us happy, learning to appreciate who we are and how unique each of us is. This activity gave us a chance to express ourselves creatively while reflecting on our identity.
In our shared reading sessions, we explored books that focus on emotions and feelings. These stories helped us understand how emotions can shape our actions and relationships. By connecting the characters’ feelings to our own experiences, we learned about empathy, self-regulation, and the importance of expressing emotions in a positive way.
We also worked on writing prompts like “What makes me happy?” and “The Best Part of ME” These prompts encouraged us to reflect on our own emotions and helped us learn how to manage difficult feelings. It also allowed us to acknowledge our strengths and celebrate what makes us unique.
As we move forward, we’ll continue to use the MITEY toolkit to support our young tamariki, manage and understand their BIG feelings.
