As our Owairoa learners grow older and move up to senior school, they start to become more aware of their responsibilities and the impact they can have on their environment and school community. At this stage of their education, they are given the opportunity to actively participate in various jobs and roles that help them develop important skills and values that they will carry with them into their future schooling.

One such responsibility that senior school children take on is that of mediator. Mediators are responsible for helping resolve conflicts between their peers, working to ensure that everyone is treated fairly and respectfully. This is an important role that helps children develop skills in communication, empathy, and problem-solving, all of which will be useful throughout their lives.

Another responsibility that senior school children take on is that of Kaitiaki environmental workers. These students are tasked with maintaining the school’s environment, ensuring that it remains clean and tidy, and promoting sustainable practices that help to reduce waste and conserve resources. This role not only helps students develop an appreciation for the environment, but also teaches them the importance of taking responsibility for their actions and the impact they have on the world around them.

Other roles that senior school children may take on include those of sports shed and worm bin attendants, as well as caretakers of the school’s Chinese garden. These roles help to promote teamwork, responsibility, and a sense of pride in one’s work, as students work together to maintain their school’s facilities and grounds.

Overall, these various responsibilities provide senior school children with a valuable opportunity to actively participate in their education, develop important skills and values, and contribute to their school in meaningful ways. By taking on these responsibilities, students learn to work together, solve problems, and make a positive impact on the world around them, laying the foundation for a lifetime of responsible citizenship and leadership.
