Wild Things and Wonderful Creations

This term our Junior School students have been lucky to work with our specialist art teacher, Mrs Cortzee, who has been inspiring creativity through stories and mixed-media art. The children began their artistic journey by listening to well-known picture books such as The Gruffalo and Where the Wild Things Are. These imaginative stories helped spark ideas for their own creative masterpieces.

Using these stories as inspiration, students created vibrant mixed media forest scenes. They explored a variety of artistic techniques and materials throughout the process. To begin, students used pastel crayons, and dye to design tall tree trunks, experimenting with colour and texture to make each forest unique. Next, they added details such as leaves, branches, clouds, and a sky using soft pastels.

The most exciting part for many students was bringing their forests to life with their very own monsters! Students carefully moulded clay to create imaginative creatures inspired by the wild characters from the stories they heard. Each monster had its own personality, shape, and style.

Finally, students added the finishing touches by decorating their monsters with pipe cleaners and googly eyes, giving them expressive faces and strange features. The results were fantastic—each artwork showed incredible imagination and creativity.

Throughout the day, students practised important artistic skills such as experimenting with different materials, combining textures, and expressing ideas visually. Most importantly, they had a lot of fun bringing their ideas to life.

A big thank you to Mrs Cortzee for sharing her passion for art and storytelling with our junior learners. We are so proud of the creativity and enthusiasm our students have showed this term, and their green forests filled with colourful monsters are something to celebrate.
