Year 2 Become Recycling Superstars

By July 3, 2026No Comments

This term, our Year 2 learners have been busy exploring the exciting topic of materials and learning how we can help care for our environment by reducing, reusing and recycling. Throughout the term, we investigated different types of materials and discussed what makes them useful for different purposes. We learned about ways to reduce waste by making thoughtful choices, reuse items instead of throwing them away and recycle materials so they can be made into something new.

As part of our learning, the students completed a creative design project. They were challenged to create a fashion accessory using recycled materials collected from home. Before making their accessories, the learners carefully planned their ideas, drew design sketches and thought about which materials would work best. It was wonderful to see their creativity and problem-solving skills in action as they transformed everyday items into unique fashion pieces. The finished accessories were amazing! We saw hats, handbags, jewellery, shoes and many other imaginative creations. The learners showed great perseverance and pride as they brought their designs to life. This project helped them understand that many items can be reused instead of being thrown away.

Another highlight of the term was watching Savvy and the Stolen Recycling. This entertaining and educational performance taught us how to be “recycling savvy.” The actors explained which plastics can be recycled most easily and encouraged us to look for plastics numbered 1, 2, and 5. We learned that recycling correctly helps protect our environment and reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Year 2 has thoroughly enjoyed becoming environmental champions this term. Through hands-on learning, creative design and engaging performances, our learners have developed a greater understanding of how small actions can make a big difference. We are proud of the responsible choices they are making and look forward to continuing our sustainability journey together
