Our Year 2 learners recently had the exciting opportunity to take part in a school tennis programme run by Coach Matt from the Howick Tennis Club. It was a fantastic experience for everyone involved. Each week, the coach visited to introduce the children to new tennis skills in a fun and engaging way.

The programme began with the basics, such as how to hold a tennis racket correctly and how to control the ball. Learners quickly progressed to learning underarm and overarm hitting, where they practised gently tapping the ball over a net. As their confidence grew, they moved on to rallying with a partner, focusing on keeping the ball going back and forth. It was wonderful to see their determination and improvement each week. Beyond learning tennis skills, the programme played an important role in developing the children’s physical abilities. Activities were designed to strengthen their gross motor skills which are essential for young learners. Learners practised balancing while moving, improving their coordination and control of their bodies. Hand-eye coordination was a key focus, as children learned to track the ball and make contact with their racket. These skills are not only important for sports but also support everyday tasks and overall physical development. The sessions were active and energetic, helping learners understand the importance of regular physical activity. Exercise supports healthy growth, builds strength and boosts confidence. It also encourages teamwork, perseverance and a positive attitude towards trying new things.

One of the highlights of the programme was seeing learners encourage each other and celebrate their successes, no matter how big or small. Overall, the tennis programme was a valuable addition to our Year 2 curriculum. We are very proud of the learners efforts and enthusiasm throughout the programme.
